Biography

Sophia Perez is a filmmaker born and raised in the Midwest. She holds a B.A. in Screenwriting from the University of Iowa, where she learned the art of filmmaking. Sophia also minored in Cinema, Spanish, and Translation.

While pursuing her degree, she acted in over 14 student projects and directed 2 short films, a web series episode, and oversaw the publication of Boundless, a translation-based literary magazine. In her spare time, she performed stand-up comedy in Iowa City.

During her senior year, she co-wrote, co-directed, and starred in a feature-length comedy titled The Womenists, a collaboration with Ashley Cimarolli. Together, they founded Wise Dweller Productions, with a mission to create female-forward stories for all to enjoy.

In her writing and films, she is drawn to the complexities of identity and the absurdity of everyday life. She makes light of the dark—or the light a bit darker.
